The staff at DeLuca Toyota is continually making improvements to our processes so we can be more efficient and offer better customer service as a result. Our fixed operations manager, Vera Sandiford, saw an opportunity to increase our service technicians’ productivity by moving parts closer to them. This has been an incredible advancement in our service and parts departments. more Vera shared her concept for the POD — Parts on Demand — module with Southeast Toyota Distributors, then she worked with Deluxe Systems Inc., a Tampa company that custom manufactures mobile storage equipment. What do the PODs include? The two POD units hold nearly $200,000 worth of parts, which represent nearly 1,000 parts numbers. Both units are restocked each night. Rotors, fuses, motors, radiators, and more are now only steps away from the technicians who install them. Parts staffers are stationed at the PODs. Each parts staffer is paired with an individual service technician and handles that technician’s parts requests. How do the PODs increase efficiency? One POD is near our technicians who work on recalls. A second POD is near our technicians who work on regular maintenance and repairs. In 2018, DeLuca Toyota’s service department wrote nearly 35,000 repair orders. For each order, technicians previously walked to the parts department to retrieve needed parts. This led to wasted time as technicians would get involved in conversations with each other or with parts personnel at the counter. Now, these PODs save our technicians approximately 10 to 15 hours a week, or at least two minutes per repair ticket.
